The Legendary History of the Swedish Muonionalusta Meteorite

The Legendary History of the Swedish Muonionalusta Meteorite

In the far reaches of northern Scandinavia, hidden beneath the mesmerizing Northern Lights, lies the oldest meteorite ever discovered - the legendary Muonionalusta meteorite. With a unique birthmark and a story that spans over a million years, this iron meteorite is a true marvel of nature.

In 1906, a group of children playing near the village of Kitkiöjärvi stumbled upon a heavily rusted stone that piqued their curiosity. They took it home and years later, scientists identified it as the IVA-class “Muonionalusta meteorite. This fine octahedron, classified as an iron meteorite due to its composition of iron, nickel, and cobalt, fell from the skies over a million years ago, landing in northern Scandinavia, just west of the Swedish-Finnish border.

For four ice ages, the Muonionalusta meteorite remained hidden, waiting for humans to discover its secrets. Its well-proportioned and exquisite pattern is due to the incredible "Widmanstätten texture,” which is formed by the meteorite's extremely slow cooling rate. This pattern is what gives the Muonionalusta meteorite its remarkable beauty.

The Swedish Muonionalusta meteorite is known as the oldest meteorite discovered so far. It belongs to the iron core of a planetary body and is therefore classified as an iron meteorite (mainly composed of iron, nickel and cobalt) formed by alternating ferrite and nickel. The well-proportioned and exquisite pattern of the Muonionalusta meteorite is the incredible “Widmanstätten texture”, which is behind the beauty of this iron meteorite. This is formed by the extremely slow cooling rate of the meteorite, which decreases by about 1°C per million years, forming solid diffusion after tens of millions or even hundreds of millions of years.

Meteorite Hunters Who Work with AWNL

Meteorite Hunters Worked with AWNL

Richard "Dick" Pugh, a meteorite hunter, has been searching for these heavenly bodies for over 30 years. His passion for meteorites has led him on an extraordinary journey, but not without personal sacrifices. Due to the harsh working conditions, Pugh's first wife divorced him. However, his current partner is also a meteorite enthusiast, and together, they have built a family team of meteorite excavators.

"It's very beautiful, but also very dangerous,"

Pugh describes his work. But the danger and risks are worth it because the Muonionalusta meteorite has become one of the most highly sought-after meteorites in the world, with a price tag that increases by 30% every year.

The meteorite fever has even reached the world of luxury watches, with brands like Rolex, Piaget, and Jaeger-LeCoultre incorporating the Muonionalusta meteorite into their limited-edition designs. In a Christie's (New York) meteorite auction, a 103mm sphere made of Muonionalusta iron meteorite was sold for the high price of $350,000 US dollars. But the Swedish Muonionalusta meteorite isn't just a status symbol; it holds a deeper spiritual meaning. Many view meteorites as divine gifts from the universe, and the Muonionalusta meteorite is no exception.
